When it comes to the commandments, everyone thinks of a step backwards into the world of legalism and impositions. There is none of this in the catechesis that Pope Francis has dedicated to the Ten Commandments - the Ten Words, as we read in Exodus 20:1 - and now collected in this volume. The perspective is literally reversed: the commandments are no longer seen as prohibitions, but as "words" of freedom.
In fact, by referring every single part of the Decalogue to the Lord Jesus, while the Pope helps us to better understand the individual commandments, we actually get to know Christ better, we perceive more and more something that in our innermost being corresponds to that Face. The law, written on two tablets of stone, we find it written within us, as if awakened. And not to arouse a duty but a desire, to allow us to be, to the full, ourselves.
As Don Fabio Rosini well points out in the preface to the volume, these catecheses do nothing but kindle "our desire to live and love, to be free, authentic, adult, loving, faithful, generous, sincere and beautiful".
