Pope Francis – Carlo Maria Martini
THE BISHOP, THE SHEPHERD
Authority in the Church Is Always “at the Service”
The volume proposes a text that cannot be found today in
which the late cardinal of Milan reflects on one of the central roles in the hierarchical communion of the Church, but
also on himself, on the pastoral task he, distinguished biblical
scholar, at one point had been called to. This reflection, very
useful in a synodal time like ours, is accompanied by that of
another beloved pastor, Pope Francis, who, like Martini, had
a Jesuit formation. Through the Pope’s pages it is possible to
deepen the theme of the bond between bishop and people.
These very intense and dense pages are capable of looking at
the Church both in its institutional and prophetic form. They
are proposed today as a path of hope, in this time when we
often speak of synodality and just as often of the hierarchical-pastoral relationship in the Church. The book offers a rereading of a ministry that has been handed over to us from
the very origins of the Church and that can exist only thanks to
an intense bond between the people of God and those who
are called to guide it.
