On the closing of the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, Sunday, Nov. 20, 2016, Pope Francis signed an apostolic letter called Misericordia et Misera. Inspired by the Gospel tale of the encounter between Jesus and the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11), the Pope highlights the need for greater reconciliation and forgiveness in the Church and in the world: «The Jubilee now ends and the Holy Door is closed. But the door of mercy of our heart continues to remain wide open.» (16) Edizioni San Paolo has prepared a special edition of this Apostolic Letter with an introduction of Mons. Rino Fisichella, the President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, who was in charge of the organization of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. In a simple and captivating way Mons. Fisichella explains the main themes of Misericordia et misera: «Mercy et misery: in two words Pope Francis collects and summarizes the entire experience of the Jubilee. At the same time, however, the Holy Father indicates that the Church has to go along on this path, because mercy does not appear as a nice interlude in the life of the Christian community. An apostolic letter that comes at a propitious moment for the life of the Church.» This edition is enriched by further apparati, like the index of the Biblical texts, of the documents, of the authors and an essay by Giuliano Vigini about Saint Augustin, who inspired the image of Misericordia et misera in his Commentary to the Gospel According to John.
