We are at the end of the 12th century. Saro is ten years old and comes to Assisi with his father, to take up service in the house of a rich cloth merchant. He is lonely and more than anything else in the world wishes to have a friend. When the master's eldest son, Giovanni known as 'the Francesco', takes him under his protection, Saro sees his dream come true. Francesco says he wants to be a knight? Well, he will be his squire and best friend, ready to follow him anywhere. The years pass between encounters and adventures, facing war and imprisonment together, until the two set off on a crusade with the intention of covering themselves in glory. But, unexpectedly, Francis decides to return to Assisi: he no longer wants to be a knight. What has happened to him? What does Francis really want? Saro no longer understands him. But, above all, can they still be friends? The life of Francis of Assisi seen through the eyes of a simple man. The sometimes funny and sometimes moving tale of a unique existential event. A reflection on the meaning of friendship.
