Novel
Sophie Scholl was born in Germany in 1921 into a family of
open and liberal ideas. With the advent of Nazism, like her
brothers, she comes into contact with Nazi youth organizations.
Gradually, Sophie discovers their oppressive and intolerant face.
She starts cultivating the seeds of a nonviolent opposition to
the dictatorship, especially after her father has been arrested
for insulting the Führer. At the age of sixteen, she meets Fritz,
a young army officer, with whom she develops an intense relationship, always suspended between friendship and love. While
the war is going on, Sophie starts attending university in Munich. There she finds her brother Hans, who with other students
has created a clandestine group called The White Rose: through
the distribution of leaflets they incite the German people to rebel against Nazism, in the name of freedom, justice, and brotherhood. Sophie takes part directly in the actions of The White
Rose. In February 1943 she is arrested together with her brother
Hans while distributing the last leaflet at the university. She is
immediately tried and put to death.
“You have to have a hard spirit and a tender heart”: It is the
phrase of the theologian Maritain Sophie assumes as a motto. Sophie was not a spotless and fearless hero, but a young
woman of her time, capable of saying no and paying with her
life for her own ideas.
This novel tells her story in an accurate
and engaging way.
