It still offends me
Voices of Women Victims of Femicide
by Maria Dell'Anno
Eleven women who are no longer with us. Eleven women's voices reconstructed from court records and direct testimony. Eleven women who lift the veil of violence they suffered and tell us their side of the story. The voices of these eleven broken lives open our eyes and answer questions we cannot avoid: What did these women think about their lives, their men, their roles as wives and mothers? How did they struggle to regain a life free from male violence? Who could and should have helped them? What did the state of which they were citizens do for them? What needs to change in our culture and in the relationship between men and women? And what can each and every one of us do to change it?
'Offence is the term that best describes my initial emotional reaction to reading, or rather listening to, these voices of women deprived of their lives and, even before that, of their right to speak while they were alive. After all, I am a woman, with the added aggravating circumstance of being the mother of one of these victims of femicide: a fully entitled injured party...' (from the afterword by Giovanna Ferrari).
‘Giving a voice to women is a fundamental part of this change, to those welcomed into anti-violence centres, but also to all those who have been killed by men who, with lucid determination, wanted to silence them’ (from the preface by Nadia Somma).
