Brother Biagio Conte, secular missionary, founder of works of charity, a believer capable of stirring consciences, prayed, fasted and went on pilgrimage across Italy and the whole of Europe, to sensitise the hearts of citizens and institutions to a commitment to peace, to care for the most fragile, to coexistence between peoples. He left this earthly life on 12 January 2023, after an illness faced with the strength, faith and hope with which he always lived. His non-violent battles have left a mark, a legacy for the Church and for society as a whole that should not be dispersed, but treasured and valued. When people in Palermo say 'Biagio Conte', they do not just mean that 'little useless servant' with blue eyes lit up by faith, but rather a point of reference for the universe of the derelict, a place of welcome for the rejected of the earth, a place where hope does not die, because for everyone there is a second chance. 'Hang in there and get busy' is the motto of those who enter the gates of the Mission of Hope and Charity, three main communities in Palermo with other satellites throughout Sicily, founded in places condemned to abandonment for decades, buildings that have been given a new lease of life at the service of the territory.
