THEY WANTED ME DEAD
Pope Francis Grappling with His Detractors
Bratislava, 12 September 2021. Pope Francis, on a pastoral visit to Slovakia, meets the Jesuits of the region. Their first question is a simple “how are you?”. But the answer is a real provocation from the Popr: “Still alive. Although some wanted me dead. I know that there have even been meetings between prelates who thought that the Pope’s health was more serious than what was being said. They were preparing the conclave. Patience! Thank God, I’m fine…”. The Pope is referring to his colon surgery at the beginning of July 2021. During his hospitalization, the “news” about the possibility of his resignation because he was seriously ill had also bounced around... returned to the sender by the Pontiff himself. “I personally can deserve attacks and insults because I am a sinner, but the Church does not deserve this: it is the work of the devil. I even told some of them,” adds the Pope, who also complains of backbiting and accusations in many Catholic circles. Gavino Pala has decided to see clearly: what are the “problems” that, according to some, the Pope would cause the Church? How has dissent against him manifested itself in recent years, both in lawful and in less lawful ways? Which traits of Pope Francis’ magisterium and pastoral action will remain in everyone’s memory, and will they be a legacy, even an uncomfortable one, for his successor?
Gavino Pala (Rome, 1980) graduated in History of European integration. He is a television producer, first for Mediaset and from 2007 on for TV2000 (the broadcaster of the Italian Episcopal Conference). Since 2015 he has been the editor for Siamo Noi, a program focused on the Church and social issues. In recent years he has followed the Synod on youth, the summit on abuse promoted by Pope Francis and the Synod on the Amazon. For Edizioni San Paolo he has published La Chiesa risponde agli abusi sui minori (2020).
