PATHS OF SYNODALITY
Interconfessional Theological Perspectives
Being together on the way – being “synodal” – highlights the community and dynamic character of Christian discipleship. However, Christian confessions have interpreted – and still interpret – the synodal dimension of the Church with different emphases and underlining. The three essays that make up the volume allow us to grasp the different sensitivities Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox look at this dimension of the Church with. They do this by retracing the history of the concept (as in the contribution dedicated to Catholic reflection signed by Riccardo Battocchio), but also by comparing the positions of some theologians (as does Basilio Petrà in the contribution dedicated to Orthodoxy) or some practices (the chosen perspective by Gianni Genre to talk about the Reformation Churches). The purpose of the volume is to highlight what each confession treasures by underlining the openings present in them, so that Christians, in addition to recognizing the gifts they already share, can discover unexplored paths, and find the courage to follow them.
Fr. RICCARDO BATTOCCHIO is president of the Italian Theological Association and rector of the Almo Collegio Capranica in Rome. He is invited professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University and at the Pontifical Lateran University.
GIOVANNI GENRE, consecrated Waldensian pastor in 1984, in 2000 was elected Moderator of the Waldensian Table, the highest office of the union of the Waldensian and Methodist churches in Italy.
Msgr.
BASILIO PETRÀ, of Greek origin, is a presbyter of the diocese of Prato and professor emeritus of moral theology at the Theological Faculty of Central Italy. For many years he has taught at the Alphonsian Academy of Rome and the Pontifical Oriental Institute of Rome.
