Cardinal Martini approaches in these meditations the figure of Stephen, the first martyr, through chapters 6-8 of the Acts of the Apostles. These pages are «an impressive document of the retrospective look of a man: Stephen is now facing death and he looks at the history of salvation, at what Christ meant for him and at the future he was called to.» Reflecting on Stephen’s figure is important for the whole community of believers: with Stephen, in fact, «the Church warns of the seriousness of being a witness and a servant: he understands that abandoning himself to God does not save him from death, but it allows him to pass through death contemplating the glory of God. He recognises what God saves and frees us from, what he does not free us from, what he prepares us for.»
The richness of these meditations is all here: in the experience of a man who approaches the revelation of the proximity of a God who is transcendent and immanent at the same time. In this way Stephen comes «at the height of his mission as a servant witness.»
The reflections by Cardinal Martini on Stephen’s figure, the first Christian martyr.
