The search for confirmation and appreciation from others, as well as the fear of judgement, belong to all human beings to some extent, but when they crystallise, in emotionally immature personalities, with old unresolved conflicts, they turn into a pervasive search for compensation, which affects the quality of affective relationships: we approach others out of the 'need' to feel alive, rather than out of the desire to share life. Love, on the other hand, is unconditional; it is capable of bringing us out of ourselves to meet the beloved, in every sense. It is in the bi-directionality of the affective relationship, in reciprocity, that we experience the joy of feeling loved and appreciated for what we are, the feeling of being 'lovable', of 'going well', of being free to express ourselves without the fear of judgement and rejection. And we will go even further: love also makes us mutually experience the feeling of 'being free to make mistakes', and the beauty of 'being forgiven'. This work aims to describe the onset of the different types of affective dependencies, to analyse their manifestations and finally to propose a way of overcoming them.
