Massimo Granieri
IT’S A PITY I DON’T KNOW HOW TO FLY
Franco Battiato and Me
Foreword by Fr. Antonio Spadaro sj
The figure of Franco Battiato represented a unicum. There is
no such precedent in the history of contemporary entertainment in Europe. The Sicilian singer-songwriter possessed and
transmitted to the listeners “the perception of the divine and
of the eternal absence of Him”.
In these pages Massimo Granieri wants to remember his friend
and above all the master of words and music. Battiato is an
artist projected to the continuous search for the infinite. The
song Centro di gravità permanente, for example, is perhaps one
of the most profound experiences Battiato has given us, a lay
prayer to be listened to while crouching in the silence of the
evening. Through the rereading of his most famous songs, the
memories of their friendship and the story of how Battiato’s
music influenced his life, as well as that of millions of Italians,
Granieri draws an all-round portrait of the great artist. The volume is enriched by interviews with artists and journalists who
have had a special relationship with Battiato and his music.
Massimo Granieri, Passionist priest, is parish priest in Calabria
in Laurignano (Cosenza) and responsible for the formation
of Catholic religion teachers for the Archdiocese of Cosenza
– Bisignano. Music critic of L’Osservatore Romano, he has published the book The Gospel According to Rock (Claudiana, 2018)
and Rock’n’Roll With a Lot of Soul (Claudiana, 2020).
