ONLINE LOVE

Love in the Age of Social Media: A Survival Manual

Social networks have accentuated phenomena that have always existed – which previously did not have a name or were not always recognizable – and facilitated their diffusion: terms like ghosting, gaslighting, polyamory, and narcissistic manipulation have entered our common lexicon. If social networks have, on the one hand, multiplied the possibilities of meeting, on the other hand they have allowed the proliferation of realities (companies, apps, and scammers) which, by leveraging the loneliness of the individual, exploit their emotional dependence even economically. But social networks also have an impact on self-esteem, self-perception, and risk generating sentimental consumerism and the inability to express love. This volume was born out of a great disappointment in love and is the result of a collaboration between a patient and a therapist. It is the path taken together by the two of them that gave birth to this “practical guide” designed to help readers not to fall into the trap of online stalking, obsessive control, toxic relationships and to live the joys and sorrows of each love story with serenity.

Tonino Cantelmi (Rome, 1962), psychiatrist and psychotherapist, is Associate Professor at the Institute of Psychology of the Gregorian University of Rome. Since 2022 he is a member of the National Bioethics Committee. Among the latest volumes he has published with Edizioni San Paolo we can remember: Psicologia della compassione. Accogliere e affrontare le difficoltà della vita (2020, with Emiliano Lambiase); Il diaconato in Italia (2021); Schiavi d’amore (2021, with Emiliano Lambiase and Michela Pensavalli).

Paola Polidoro is a counselor and music therapist. After studying art history, she has translated her art passion in the LeArcheTÍPE.it project, a blog in which she rereads fairy tales and myths with the eyes and experiences of a contemporary woman.

Selling Points

  • A useful book, the result of the direct experience of the two authors: patient and therapist.
  • The phenomenon of relationships born online is now common, but the ability to manage them in a healthy way is not as common: this manual teaches you how to do it.
