Paolo Curtaz
A CHURCH UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Reading the Acts of the Apostles in Time of the Synod
Christ yes, Church no. We often hear this repeated. Indeed, in
this historical moment, in the West, we are often told: Christ
maybe, Church absolutely not. But who is the Church, what
is the Church? Who belongs to the Church and why? Pope
Francis asked communities around the world to question
themselves, to reflect about being the Church. The task of proclaiming the Gospel throughout history has taken on different
traits and at this moment most of the things we do seem to
have no effect. But whom or what to draw inspiration from for
this synodal confrontation? Paolo Curtaz proposes to reread
and meditate, alone or in a group, the pages of the Acts of
the Apostles. In this Bible book the nascent Church has found
itself facing far more complex questions than we are faced to
in this time. How did they respond? What criterion did they
apply? What spirit guided them? Let’s try to go back to the
sources, to imagine a Church under construction which, while
looking to the future, firmly remembers where its foundations
are and dares to look forward.
