Carlo Maria Martini
GOD WANTS LOVE
A volume that collects seven unpublished homilies – held in
1975 – by Carlo Maria Martini, then Rector of the Pontifical
Biblical Institute of Rome.
Martini was, at the time, 48 years old and well-known just
under biblical scholars. However, his acquaintance with the
Word of God already made him one of the most sought-after preachers, for his ability to combine the questions posed
by the biblical text with personal and community spirituality.
The readers will discover Martini as at times surprising, perhaps even unusual voice. He is not afraid of being provoked
by the Bible and even by its difficult pages, as in the case of
the commentary on the story of Jephthah or on the invectives
of Jesus against the Pharisees. The author links these pages to
the present day of a clergy and a Church that cannot “pretend
to be what they are not”.
Card. Carlo Maria Martini (1927-2012), Jesuit and biblical scholar, has been the archbishop of Milan from 1979 to 2002. In
1980, in his diocese, he started the practice of the School of
the Word, inspired by the classic method of Lectio divina. A
man of dialogue between religions, author of books appreciated all over the world, his culture and his studies have allowed him to speak to believers and non-believers and to
attract many young people. Among the many books he has
published with Edizioni San Paolo we can remember Uscite
dalla massa (2022); Elia; Samuele; Pietro; Giacobbe; Atti degli apostoli (all 2019); Stefano; Gli Apostoli; Timoteo; Gesù (all 2017);
Abramo; Geremia; Il Padre Nostro; Paolo; I racconti della Passione
(all 2016); Chiamò quelli che Egli volle (2015); Essere nelle cose
del Padre (2014).
