Advent and Christmas – often thought of and lived as two times that follow one after the other – form a single time, the time of the Lord’s manifestation. They are the diptych of a single great work: the mystery of the Lord’s coming in glory at the end of time and in the humility of the flesh in Bethlehem. For this reason, it is urgent today to regain a real Advent’s and Christmas’ spirituality. This does not simply mean entering the church to perform secular rites, listening to biblical readings and ancient prayers, but much more deeply it means accessing a dimension of the spirit that belongs to us. There is no full life where there is no capacity and will to watch over and take care of the other. In these pages, therefore, we try to meditate on the spiritual meaning of Advent and Christmas in the light of the Holy Scriptures and in particular of the Gospel, in order to celebrate the mystery of the Lord’s manifestation as a mystery of life, desire, waiting for salvation.

Goffredo Boselli, Doctor of Theology at the Institut Catholique in Paris, holds a master’s in history of Religions and Religious Anthropology at the Sorbonne University Paris IV. For Edizioni San Paolo he published, together with Enzo Bianchi, Il Vangelo celebrato (2017); Sorgente di vita. Liturgia e ricerca spirituale (2017); Le nozze dell’agnello (2020). He is also the editor of the new Italian edition of the daily Missal (2020) and of the festive Missal (2021).
